Dell EMC VNX 5500

The VNX5500 is designed for the midrange space and can be either block or file in architecture. The predecessor to the VNX5500 is the CX4-240. The 5500 uses the DPE form factor in either a 15 drive, 3.5” 3U form factor or a 25 drive, 2.5” 2 U form factor. Each DPE has 4 on-board 8GB FC ports and 2 SAS ports for back end.

Each SP in the 5500 utilizes a 2.13GHz Xeon 5600 4-core processor with 12GB of RAM for a total of 24GB RAM between the 2 SPS, and supports a maximum of 250 drives, or 720 TB raw. The management system utilized is Unisphere.

The 5500 supports Raid Levels 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 and 6. The maximum number of pools is 40, with a maximum number of 4,096 LUNS, 16TB LUN size.

The VNX series features FASTCache. FASTCache leverages the lower response time and better IOPS of flash drives without dedicating Flash drives to specific applications. FASTCache addresses a hot spot anywhere in the array improving application performance especially for workloads with frequent and unpredictable large increases in I/O activity for an improved Total Cost of Ownership.

FASTCache useable is calculated with Raid 10. The 5500 has a max of 1TB useable using 20 x 100GB SSDs or 10 x 200GB SSD drives.
