What is Load Testing? And How Does It Guarantee Functionality?

Ask the Expert: What is load testing? And how does it guarantee functionality?

Christine Austria and Brian Wolden, Curvature’s Server & Storage Solutions Sales Engineer II, discuss load testing and how it ensures reliable functionality.

Christine: Hey, and welcome back to Ask to Expert. Today, we are joined by our Server and Storage Pre-Sales Engineer, Brian Wolden, to talk about load testing and how it guarantees functionality in servers and server components. So, let’s start with the basics. Brian, can you explain what load testing is?

Brian: Yeah, load testing is basically simulating the stress of a production environment without actually having to put that server into production.

Christine: So, why do we load test and how does it guarantee functionality?

Brian: So, load testing and stress testing helps find components that are about to fail or that might fail under load. So, by finding those components early, we can replace them and make sure that we install components that are fully functional. Additionally, new components tend to have what’s called the bathtub effect, where they may have some factory defects. And so, putting those components under load will help find those defects and replace them with functioning parts.

Christine: Speaking of components, which ones are commonly load tested?

Brian: The components we most commonly load test are things like CPUs, DIMMs, GPUs, and hard drives. Those are the ones that are most likely to fail under load, so that’s what we focus on.

Christine: That makes sense. Well, thanks for joining us today, Brian, and teaching us about load testing. It was really insightful. If you have any questions for our experts, simply leave a comment below, and we’lll see you next time on Ask the Expert.
