Breathing New Life into Network Equipment Labeled “End of Life”

Santa Barbara, Calif.- March 3, 2014 – Network Hardware Resale (NHR), the world’s leading provider of pre-owned and new networking and data center solutions, continues to challenge the status quo on product refresh cycles and maintenance options. NHR has built their business on the belief that equipment is prematurely retired at the benefit of OEMs, forcing organizations to refresh their networks at the guide of vendor influence, rather than keeping products in their data center that are still working.

Studies conducted by Forrester Consulting concluded that “up to 79% of organizations refresh their wired networking infrastructure every one to five years, as guided by industry averages, which originate from vendors.”[1] This means that companies will completely rip and replace working products because they were unaware of the option to keep working equipment. After surveying 304 IT decision makers, Forrester found that “even though IT budgets are under constant scrutiny, businesses have defaulted to vendor influence which has blinded them to the rewards of extending hardware lifecycles and third-party maintenance solutions.”

NHR’s position in the market allows them to inform customers how to best run their data centers with a myriad of new and used networking and data center products. “We’re finding that IT managers are becoming savvier regarding the actual useful life of networking products,” said Mike Sheldon, President and CEO of Network Hardware Resale. “As vendors have continued to push shortened refresh cycles, more IT managers have turned to NHR to help them manage their networks.”

Embarking on a large-scale data center overhaul in 2009, Sansum Clinic needed to upgrade their network on a small budget. “After taking a closer look at Network Hardware Resale and what they had to offer, the choice became clear,” said Donovan Wade, Manager of Technical Services at Sansum Clinic. After reviewing their options, Sansum purchased hundreds of pre-owned Cisco devices saving them $1.1 million in hardware costs (over OEM list price).

Taking a hybrid approach of blending new and pre-owned products in their network, Sansum chose to deploy pre-owned Cisco 1800/2800/3800 Series Routers instead of new 1900/2900/3900 Series Routers; pre-owned 2960G Series Switches instead of new 2960S Series Switches, and pre-owned 6100 Series Line Cards over new 6700 Series Line Cards. This approach enabled Sansum to deploy a much more robust, low-latency and fully-redundant data center core. “Our needs are changing all the time and the ability to get pre-owned equipment, often in less than one business day, contributed to the success of his project.”

Products like NHR’s NetSure® Maintenance Program, a complete and customizable network coverage solution, offers protection and support for products that have been declared to be EOL (“end of life”) by vendors, which allows for an affordable alternative to traditional OEM maintenance. Third-party maintenance solutions like NetSure® mean that companies can now easily compare and assess ongoing maintenance contracts to find operational expenditure (OPEX) savings.
